The Sugar in Energy and Soft Drinks Turned Into Lollipops

August 13, 2015 by Chris Durso

News flash… Energy and soft drinks, even the ones that are supposed to be “good for you,” contain an obscene amount of sugar. And, there may be no better way to illustrate this point, than to represent the soft drink sugar in lollipop form.

Artist Henry Hargreaves is up to the task, with his project (de)hydrate. Hargreaves started by boiling the soft drinks down, until only the sugary remnants remained. The sugary mixture is then poured into molds, labeled with the drink name, and impaled on a lolli-stick.

Even Vitamin Water, when all of the drink’s asserted health benefits are taken away, is nothing more than a giant sucker. See more below.

Jabba’s Bounty, Pop Culture Characters Frozen In Chocolate Carbonite

October 31, 2014 by Chris Durso

Artist Henry Hargreaves, via his latest project Jabba’s Bounty, created two things. One, an alternate universe where Jabba The Hutt puts out a bounty on various pop culture characters. The other one is those same characters turned into edible carbonite chocolate bars.

Using some of his favorite childhood action figures, Hargreaves created molds, poured in some milk chocolate, and applied edible silver paint for the full effect.

Karma tells us that we should be seeing a Boba Fett bar. But, according to the Sarlac, he doesn’t taste so good.

Le Voyage Dans la Lune Recreated In Cake Frosting

July 21, 2014 by Chris Durso

If you’ve never seen Le Voyage Dans la Lune (A Trip to the Moon), it’s probably because it was a movie made well over one-hundred years ago, and contains no superheroes or hobbits.

Either way, to pay homage to the film and the anniversary of the actual first moon landing, Henry Hargreaves recreated the iconic last scene of Le Voyage in cake frosting.

With the help of frosting model Amirah Kassem from Flour Shop, Hargreaves brings us the moon landing scene via animated gif, which matches the choppy pace of the movie perfectly.

Coffee Cups of The World, A Photo Series of Beautiful Takeaway Cups

July 1, 2014 by Chris Durso

As most of you may not realize — because there’s always that same green mermaid on your coffee — is that takeaway coffee cups are often an exercise in minimalist beauty and sharp graphic design.

Artist Henry Hargreaves sees the aesthetic appeal in these disposable items, and has documented drinking vessels from around the globe, with Coffee Cups of The World.

The series takes us through this often overlooked art form — from the minimalist approach, to the hard sell of garish colors or a humorous cartoon.

Food Maps, Countries Created From The Foods That Best Represent Them

March 13, 2014 by Chris Durso

Inspired by their passion for travel, artists Caitlin Levin and Henry Hargreaves created Food Maps. The series consists of countries recreated using some of the most iconic foods from each — making the maps as hunger-inducing and educational as they are nice to look at.

The US consists of its major export of corn, while Italy is unsurprisingly tomato-heavy. Check ’em all out below and let the international debate begin.
