Ephemeral Oil Paintings by Otto Lange

June 8, 2012 by Chris Durso

Food Art Friday is back…

For realistic oil paintings of food, with a dash of 50s-60s era ephemera, Georgia-based artist Otto Lange hits the mark. Using oil paint to create photorealistic imagery, Lange draws inspiration for his works from vintage toys, food packaging, and television.

The end result not only borrows its subject matter from the past, but Lange’s work manages to look as though it was created when atomic disintegrators were all the rage, and Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer was on the telly.

Weight Watchers Recipe Cards of The 70s

April 25, 2012 by Chris Durso

American cuisine was horrifying enough in the 1970s. Now, add calorie counting and recipes supplied by a company whose primary objective is to make sure that you starve, and you get Weight Watchers recipe cards from 1974.

And it’s no wonder why the company has been so successful. Just looking at such recipes as Cabbage Casserole Czarina and Fluffy Mackerel Pudding, the cards are effective enough to ruin appetites here in 2012. Well done, Weight Watchers.

See more frightening cuisine here.

Wacky Packages, Making Fun of American Products One Sticker at a Time

February 16, 2012 by Chris Durso

For those who didn’t grow up in the 70s or early 80s, Wacky Packages might be lost on you. Because it was around that time that the satirical sticker series was at its popularity apex, and its sophomoric play on words was actually considered high comedy.

Originally released in 1967 by Topps, Wacky Packages bashed U.S. products, and were a thinly-veiled criticism of American advertising and consumerism. However, that wasn’t what made kids at the time collect these by the pack.

Rather, it was our familiarity with these everyday products and awesome illustration, mixed with gross-out humor. That’s also what made any flat surface a potential canvas for a Wacky Packages sticker collage.

From Footsie Rolls and Plastered Peanuts to Hostage Cupcakes and Raw Goo Spaghetti Sauce — no consumer product was safe from being mocked in sticker form.

Who remembers these and/or had a fridge covered in them?

Vintage Scratch and Sniff Stickers

September 21, 2011 by Chris Durso

Remember when you were finally able to stay inside the lines while coloring, or successfully execute a cursive ‘R’? And, do you remember the sense of accomplishment you had when you received a scratch and sniff sticker as a reward? Then, you probably also remember the soul-crushing disappointment of when the stickers ran out of smell.

But hey… You got to feel good about yourself for a few hours, and inhaled some synthetic pickles and pepperoni pizza in the process. Good work!

Remember these? And more stickers can be found at the Etsy store of StuckOnStickers.
