A Dose of Ephemera, Quisp Cereal

Originally released in 1965, Quisp was your typical kiddie-crack in corn cereal form. The cereal was named after its mascot, Quisp the Alien — a lovable, propeller-headed goofball with a severe speech impediment.

Quisp was discontinued in the late 70’s, but was reborn the following decade with limited distribution, and has since become an internet sensation.

Not long after this article was originally written, Quisp started showing up in limited release throughout the U.S. Are were you more of a Quake person?

Cube Your Eggthusiasm: The Egg Cuber

photo: Luke Mahan's flickr photostream

Apparently invented to combat pesky round eggs from rolling off plates—a mad genius, perhaps psychopath came up with the ‘Egg Cuber’. Stan Pargman set up the Square Egg Co. (seriously) in 1976 to make this contraption that encases a cooked, peeled egg and, after a few minutes, releases it reshaped.

With all the technology that we have access to, couldn’t we just bioengineer hens to produce square eggs so we wouldn’t have to buy novelty items like this on Ebay? Or perhaps that would be like trying to get a square egg through a round hole [~cue rimshot~].

Current versions of Egg Cubers, as well as the original patent can be found at foodiggity’s Facebook page.

Uncle O’Grimacey, Everyone’s Favorite Green Deadbeat Uncle

Uncle O’Grimacey was the Irish uncle of our favorite velvet McDonald’s mascot, Grimace. He had been responsible for bringing McDonald’s Shamrock Shakes over from Ireland every March.

However, just like a typical deadbeat uncle, he hadn’t been seen in decades, and the infamous green shakes became nothing but a legend in these parts.

Although, the frozen green treat is back on its annual schedule, Uncle O’Grimacey is nowhere to be found. Just like Uncle Ned, who no longer sends you a birthday card.

Foodiggity is proud to present a new feature that we like to call ‘A Dose of Ephemera’. It will pay tribute to vintage advertising, art, products, or concepts that hold a special place in our psyche. We will of course be focusing on food ephemera ’cause that’s how we roll… Enjoy.
