Military Rations Made To Look Like Michelin Starred Meals

May 22, 2017 by Chris Durso

MREs (meals ready to eat) are designed to be quick and convenient, without much care for actual cooking and plating. Chef Chuck George partnered with videographer Jimmy Pham and Henry Hargreaves, to change the way we look at these military meals.

Titled MRE, the project takes these various foods, often texturally-challenged and monochromatic, and plates them to appear like gourmet meals. Although we probably won’t see servicemen actually wanting to plate their food like a gourmand — it does make you wonder if MREs suddenly become more palatable if presented outside of their plastic bags and tin cans. See the work in progress below.

‘We wanted to see how different Armies go about feeding their troops. You can tell a lot about how valued someone is by the food they are given. In respect to servicemen and woman across the globe we wanted to take these meals and elevate them to Michelin Star quality meals. In essence taking some of the most unappetizing food, thats given to the bravest people and making it look fit for the nation’s leader.’

Play With Your Food, A Series of Very Punny Food Photos

December 9, 2015 by Chris Durso

Jelly Bean Burrito

We’re big fans of playing with your food. Puns kinda rule too. Therefore, artist Lizzie Darden is one of our new favorite people — having created a punny masterwork with Play With Your Food.

The photo series has a little fun with some food items — often with some creative wordplay or, at times, getting a bit too literal. Either way, I’d like a Jelly Bean Burrito, pronto.

Octopus Banana / Domenic Bahmann / 2013

You had me at “Octopus Banana.” Nonetheless, Melbourne-based artist, Domenic Bahmann, has created a whole series of creative food art.

One common theme in the series is how Bahmann cleverly interprets animals using various foodstuffs. And, he found a great use for farfalle. Check out more below and over here.

Pizza Is The New Black, A Series of Monochromatic ‘Pizza’ With Unusual Toppings

February 12, 2015 by Chris Durso

3

What actually constitutes a pizza? It needs to be round, sometimes square, with a base preferably made of dough. Then it needs to have stuff on it.

With those criteria in mind, Pizza Is The New Black is a series of the most interesting pizza we’ve seen in a while. The monochromatic photos include a pizza representing one color — including the dough and background. The toppings, although mostly inedible, are only meant to blend into its color scheme.

The series is brought to us by design studio Black Pizza, chef Julie Basset and photographer Erwan Fichou. One yellow pizza with extra rubber ducky, please!
