How Dr. Seuss Created Green Eggs and Ham

January 9, 2015 by Chris Durso

green-eggs-and-ham

Most are familiar with the tale of finicky eating and gibberish that is Green Eggs and Ham. However, we’ve rarely been given insight into the creative process of its author, Dr. Seuss.

Lynda Claassen, director of Special Collections & Archives at the University of California San Diego, shares the creative stash of Theodore Geisel — including sketches and color notes to the book’s printer. The collection also includes Seuss’ handwritten notes on phrasing, which he referred to as his ‘bone pile.’

We also find out how the simplistic and rhythmic phrasing of the book was the result of a bet between Geisel and the book’s publisher. Spoiler… Dr. Seuss won that bet.

When Dr. Seuss Was In Advertising

August 8, 2012 by Chris Durso

Before he introduced us to Sneetches, the Lorax, and green cuisine — Dr. Seuss was a typical corporate drone, illustrating ads for major companies. Using his unmistakable style and sense of humor, Theodore Seuss Geisel tried to convince us that we needed Schaefer Beer, Ford Motors, and Holly Sugar — long before he was selling us on the idea of a cat in a hat, or tiny universes on clovers.

The Dr. Seuss Collection, housed at the Mandeville Special Collections Library at the University of California, San Diego, contains many examples of Dr. Seuss’s advertising artwork. The library has scanned a selection of these advertisements for greater access. Besides promoting the Standard Oil companies Flit and Esso, Dr. Seuss’s creations have hawked such diverse goods as ball bearings, radio promotional spots, beer, and sugar.

Ron Swanson Meets Dr. Seuss

February 8, 2012 by Chris Durso

Dr. Seuss never met Ron Swanson. But we’re sure if he had, Sam I Am would’ve been replaced with the Parks Department Director of Pawnee, Indiana. And there would be some sort of green meat tornado involved.

Ron Swanson vs. Dr. Seuss is an illustration by Tom Trager, and available as a t-shirt over at Red Bubble.

Crocheted Green Eggs and Ham

March 4, 2011 by Chris Durso

Theodor Geisel, better known to us as Dr. Seuss, would have been 107 years old this week. In celebration, there has been no shortage of tributes to the man who not only helped teach kids how to read, but also provided thinly-veiled lessons in environmental awareness and racism.

Crocheted Green Eggs and Ham is brought to us by Craftster user The Izz. She even gets in on the action with a little Dr. Seuss-inspired description.

I will crochet them in a box.
I will crochet them with a fox.
I will crochet them in a house.
I will crochet them with a mouse.
I will crochet them here or there.
I do like them anywhere.
I will crochet green eggs and ham.
For I do love that Seussy man.
