The Refrigerator Igloo

November 19, 2010 by Chris Durso

Berlin based artist Ralf Schmerberg recently created ‘Der Stromfresser’ (Electricity Hog), an igloo built of 322 refrigerators. Constructed in Hamburg, the igloo was built to raise awareness of energy efficiency, and to help a few Germans act like Eskimos and Pittsburgh hockey fans.

Relying on rejected heat to stay toasty inside, the message was that ‘Wastefulness is the biggest source of energy’. Schmerberg was even considerate enough to not leave any of the 322 refrigerator doors open — because that would have just been wasteful.
