August 1, 2016 by Chris Durso

When painting a portrait of Anthony Kiedis, lead singer of The Red Hot Chili Peppers, it’s important to choose the appropriate medium.

So, if you’re an artist such as Nathan Wyburn, who specializes in celebrity food portraits, you go with the obvious choice of using chili sauce. Check out the process if you have one hot minute.

A Portrait Created With 20,000 Steeped Tea Bags

February 4, 2015 by Chris Durso

Red-Hong-Yi

Whether it’s with coffee, chopsticks, or lunch… artist Red Hong Yi is very good at creating art with whatever’s available. This time, the Malaysian artist wanted to create a large-scale piece that would pay tribute to her homeland and the process of making the Malaysian sweet tea, Teh Tarik.

This time, Red’s medium of choice was about 20,000 tea bags, steeped to create varying shades of color and tone. The used tea bags were then placed together into panels, and then hung to form the picture of a vendor pulling tea.

Be sure to check out the video below too… Red’s creative process is pure awesome. Her tea-pouring skills… not so much.

Music legend Willie Nelson recently showed up on 352 slices of toast, thanks to Honey Thompson, a team leader at Whole Foods. The portrait was created to help promote the launch of Dark Rye, the store’s new online magazine, and is on display at SXSW in Austin, TX.

Brought to us by Mexican design studio Golpeavisa, is a portrait of Danish chef René Redzepi. The portrait, created for the August cover of Clase Premier magazine, consists of placed objects on a dinner table, and depicts Redzepi in stoic fashion.

And, if you’re wondering how you get immortalized as a table setting — Redzepi’s restaurant, Noma, has repeatedly been named the best restaurant in the world. That’s how.
