Food Will Win The War, Disney’s World War II Propaganda Film

When they weren’t creating timeless classics or animated acid trips, Disney took full advantage of having America’s attention in the 40s, by making war propaganda films. Created in 1942, Food Will Win The War attempts to make US citizens feel warm and fuzzy during wartime, by using US agriculture as a measure of the country’s power.

However, the film occasionally derails with highly-exaggerated statistics, images of spaghetti sweaters covering the earth, and giant ears of corn hanging over Hitler’s head. See for yourself.

Listening To Your Food: Synesthesia by Terri Timely

Synesthesia is a condition of the mind, where the line between senses becomes blurred. The ability to see sounds, or hear colors, is a common occurrence. To illustrate this in the most bizarre way possible, director Terri Timely created the aptly titled Synesthesia.

The short film begins with a boy who perceives tastes as sounds, literally plugging into and listening to his food — then it just spirals out of control from there. Enjoy.

Oedipus, Starring Vegetables

Oedipus — the ancient tale of child abandonment, parent murder and incest, has been retold starring vegetables. As silly as the concept might sound, the stop-motion animation is shot brilliantly using classic CinemaScope and is quite beautiful. With a story that would’ve surely took Hollywood 4-plus hours to tell, Veggie Oedipus wraps up in around 8 minutes.

Rockaway Taco: Surfing and Fish Tacos in Queens, NY

Filmed this past summer, Rockaway Taco documents a day-in-the-life of a surf taco stand in Queens, NY.

Located a block away from Rockaway Beach, the taco stand shares a corner space with an Italian ice stand, coffee shop, organic vegetable stand, and requisite surf shop. The mishmash of businesses work together as a whole to provide a market and refuge for local firefighters, NYPD, surfers, and the occasional crazie.
