Inspirational Food Art by Mundane Matters

June 16, 2016 by Chris Durso

mundane-matters

Here at Foodiggity, we’re all about playing with our food. Artist, Danling Xiao (@mundane_matters), feels the same way. However, Xiao plays with her food, not just for the fun of it, but to help inspire and raise awareness about food sources and sustainability.

Beginning with produce that she often finds in the “imperfect fruit” section at her local farmers market — Xiao creates adorable and thought-provoking food art, accompanied by a message and her source of inspiration for each.

See more of the daily project over at Mundane Matters on Instagram.

Kaffir lime brain from @lianerossler’s garden. ? /// A few days ago I watched Ken Jennings’ @ted talk about artificial intelligence and its impact on us. I found it inspiring so I just watched it again to write down some of his words for us. /// The things we learn or carry in our head, are what make who we are as individuals, as a species. I don’t want to live in a world where cultural literacy becomes this bubble of speciality so that no one knows the common association used to bind our civilisation together. It is a vast cultural heritage we share, without having to outsource to our devices, search engines and smart phones. /// We are at a point where we need to make the choice of what kind of future we want to be living in. We can choose a new golden age where information is universally available more than ever. On the other hand we will be living in a gloomy dystopia where machines take over and we decide what we know about is no longer important because everything is in the cloud and why would we bother learning? Something for us to think about. ?? #mundanematters

Dream journal. Note before this dream I didn’t know barramundi (Australian native fish) only lives in the Indo-West Pacific region. In my dream Anett and I went out to the sea with a bunch of fishermen. We were in an inflated boat and a fisherman was trying to catch some fish for us. Anett being Anett, demanded to catch barramundi. The fisherman had so many selections, but Anett only wanted barramundi. I turned my head to the back of the boat. Two older fishermen, with big beard like Anett’s father, laughed and said, ‘there is no barramundi here! This is Canada!’ What an educational dream. ?? #mundanematters

Everyone sings – We all live in a yellow submarine. Yellow submarine, yellow submarine. ? /// Imperfect fruits are beautiful. By selling them at a much cheaper price, my local farmers market has saved 2 million kilograms of fruits and vegetables from being thrown into the bin in the past year. Buy them if you have the options. @lianerossler and I use them in our workshop too. ????? #mundanematters #superlocalxmundanematters

When I was little, our teacher taught us how to draw a tree, similar to above. For many years till I started at design school (almost 23 years) and realised there was such thing existed as ‘creativity’, had I started to wonder if there was another way to draw a tree. It is still hard for me to change the old perspective as the lazy side of the brain dominates us so much. To be creative, is to beat that lazy side of brain, is a fight within ourselves. ⚔❤️ Join me at #plantplanet workshop. Link in bio. ☝️☝☝ #mundanematters #superlocalxmundanematters
