Macrame Junk Food Reminds Us of Grandma’s House

Ed Bing’s series Delectable, uses colored thread and thousands of knots to create fluffy non-edible versions of comfort food. The series includes an almost good enough to eat cheeseburger, an ice cream sundae, and a cupcake complete with rainbow sprinkles.

The combination of intricate macrame and the empty promise of goodies, actually conjures up mixed emotions from childhood. Sort of like what we felt visiting grandma’s house and seeing her display of handmade afghans, and inedible ribbon candy and rubber grapes in the dining room.

Cupcake: Sprinkles, 2006. Waxed linen, cotton floss. 6 x 4 x 4 in.
Key Lime Pie, 2006. Waxed linen, raffia, cotton. 4 x 5 x 4 in.

  1. wow, I am seriously about to gobble up that cupcake…except its macrame! Very fun. I am a big macrame fan myself, and I have a blog totally devoted to the art. For anyone looking for more info about how to macrame, I just wanted to post a link to our
    Macrame blog

PS-I totally remember trying to suck on those rubber grapes. did everybody’s grandma have those? weird!

    enjoy!
