Artist Martha Rich paints a variety of subjects — from inspirational women and vintage underwear ads, to the aforemetioned cake and lobster. But regardless of the subject, her paintings always show a signature style that is steeped in sarcasm, while celebrating the ridiculous.
Influenced by her collection of vintage cookbooks, Rich created a series of food art inspired by one book’s 70’s-style colors and “weird recipes and weird advice on how to entertain.” Rich then deliberately protects a few words from a page, and then, as if reveling in the book’s ridiculousness and to save it from further embarrassment, paints directly over it.
