There is an old adage that the secret ingredient in any good cooking is love. This is especially true when Italian grandmothers and Sunday afternoons are involved. So for this episode of Power to the People, foodiggity rolled out of bed on Sunday, put on the gold chains, and got the sauce on.

But this is far from your average Sunday sauce. Inspired by one of the greatest things ever—a Cuban dish called Ropa Vieja—we proudly present to you… Foodiggity’s Sunday Love Ragu.

But a spoon should be a cook’s ultimate tool, a weapon even. It should be your guide to kitchen dominance… Your culinary Sherpa.

A spoon… For real?

Well consider this. Some pro cooks will carve their names in their spoons… They claim them. You do not touch another cook’s spoons. This is because their spoon is their guide to quality control. It tells a pro everything that they need to know. Besides the tasting part, it can also be used for general measurement, as a meat flipper, a baster, or to flip frozen peas at co-workers. It is truly invaluable.

Salt of the Earth | Gary and Katy Rupert

For our premiere issue of Salt of the Earth, I sat down with Gary and Katy Rupert of Three Meadows Farm in Somerset County, New Jersey. I found out what goes into maintaining their mostly organic and self-sustaining farm.

I also learned why asparagus and walnut trees do not play nice, why Jersey tomatoes rule, and what might have been living in Dr. Seuss’ chicken coop. Enjoy.
