A Detailed Map of Middle Earth Drawn on A Starbucks Coffee Cup

January 16, 2015 by Chris Durso

Besides providing a place for their ubiquitous mermaid logo, an ingredient checklist, and your name spelled wrong, Starbuck’s coffee cups are a great blank canvas to create art.

However, we’ve never seen cartography involved in Starbucks cup art — which makes this detailed map of Middle Earth from The Lord of The Rings that much more impressive. Even better, it was left behind by the unknown artist for a Starbucks barista to find.

As far as we know, all the map points are spelled correctly. Can any Hobbits out there confirm this?

Funny Comics Series Drawn on Starbucks Coffee Cups

November 14, 2014 by Chris Durso

Cartoonist Josh Hara likes Starbucks. He also likes the blank canvas that their coffee cups provide for his comics.

His Instagram project, #100CoffeeCups, looks to place a comic on 100 coffee cups. The comics are not only creative and a wonderful use of white space, but are hilarious enough to brighten up anyone’s morning. Unless you don’t drink coffee, in which case, there is no hope for you.

Keep up with the series here.

Artist Adds A New Dimension To Starbucks Cup Art

October 14, 2014 by Chris Durso

We’ve certainly seen our share of coffee cup art… especially artists taking liberties with the Starbucks mermaid.

South Korean artist Soo Min Kim takes the medium of disposable coffee cup art a step further, by compromising the cup itself, and having a little fun with the ubiquitous mermaid.

Artist Alters Starbucks Logo To Reveal The Personalities of Its Patrons

September 11, 2014 by Chris Durso

Artist Alejo Malia recently had a little fun with the ubiquitous Starbucks logo. With some minor design alterations, Malia is able to transform the mermaid into some of the most typical personalities that you’d find at the coffee shop.

Whether it’s an iPad-toting social media addict, a cupcake fiend, or a good old-fashioned hipster… the series makes a strong case for why Starbucks should consider using several logos.

My vote is still with changing the angle of the mermaid completely. That, or the hipster.

Starbucks Barista Illustrates Customer Names On Coffee Cups, Spells Them Correctly

May 14, 2014 by Chris Durso

For the few times that Starbucks actually asks for your name to write on the cup, an embarrassing misspelling of your name is imminent.

London-based Starbucks barista, Gabriel Lafitte Nkweti, not only makes sure to spell your name correctly, but turns the names of his coffee customers into works of art.

The art is obviously not done while your latte is being made… Starbucks isn’t that slow. Nkweti takes in upwards of 40 hours to complete one piece of cup art — drawing inspiration from his patrons and various art forms. See more of his collection at his Facebook page.
