This Artist Reinvents The Starbucks Mermaid On Each Of His Coffee Cups

September 28, 2017 by Chris Durso

What is it about the Starbucks coffee cup that inspires art? Is it the minimalist design? The unmistakable and perfectly-executed mermaid logo? Or, is it just the caffeine contained within that gets the creative juices flowing?

Either way, the cups have provided some of the best food art we’ve seen here. And, the work of South Korean artist, Soo Min Kim, is no exception. Using the Starbucks cup as canvas, Kim uses the mermaid as a starting point and rethinks the cup’s environment around her face.

The coffee mascot, by the hand of Kim, then becomes The Beatles, the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man — or made to look as though she’s simply living amongst us humans. See more below and over at Instagram.

A Detailed Map of Middle Earth Drawn on A Starbucks Coffee Cup

January 16, 2015 by Chris Durso

Besides providing a place for their ubiquitous mermaid logo, an ingredient checklist, and your name spelled wrong, Starbuck’s coffee cups are a great blank canvas to create art.

However, we’ve never seen cartography involved in Starbucks cup art — which makes this detailed map of Middle Earth from The Lord of The Rings that much more impressive. Even better, it was left behind by the unknown artist for a Starbucks barista to find.

As far as we know, all the map points are spelled correctly. Can any Hobbits out there confirm this?

What to do with all of those disposable coffee cups? Well, if you’re creative and have some time to spare, you can use them to create a daily art project.

Cuppaday is an art series by Sydney-based artist Paul Garbett, where he upcycles an empty disposable coffee cup every day into a new cylindrical work of art. Check out more from the series below.

Starbucks Coffee Cup Sleeve Art

February 3, 2014 by Chris Durso

We’ve certainly seen our share of coffee cup art. But what about those cardboard sleeves that keep you from burning your hand on your mocha-choca two-pump half-caf latte?

Corporate banker and coffee sleeve artist Ahmed Al Emairi tries to improve upon the under-appreciated insulator with his Instagram project, Starbucksism. Ahmed uses the iconic Starbucks mermaid to recreate illustrations of pop culture icons, from Darth Vader and Jack Sparrow, to Michael Jackson and Steve Jobs.

The Art of The Disposable Coffee Cup Lid

May 13, 2011 by Chris Durso

The disposable coffee cup lid is perhaps one of the more underappreciated everyday objects. Besides being the last line of defense between you and 2nd degree burns, the often overlooked lid is the subject of avid collectors and art exhibits. You read that correctly.
