They Don’t Make Cookbooks Like They Used To

Discovered by Russell Jones and covered on his blog, Balanced Recipes by Pillsbury is a vintage 1933 recipe book. Made from stamped aluminum, recipes could be protected from the elements or small bomb attacks.

Great for those who take their recipes seriously — even if it’s for something called Thimble Anchovy Biscuits.

CHOW Kicks It Old School with The Last Kodachrome Christmas

Rustic Tavern by CHOW

CHOW recently presented a tribute to American cuisine past and antiquated mediums with The Last Kodachrome Christmas. The photo shoot is inspired by vintage food photography, and uses actual Kodachrome — a type of film long assumed extinct, but rather just in its late stage death throes.

Often associated with boring vacation slides and brilliantly oversaturated imagery, one might ask why CHOW would even use Kodachrome. Well, the answer can be summed up by a simple philosophy that we stick to here at Foodiggity… food ephemera kicks ass.

Campbell’s Soup Cans as American Flag: Vintage Advertising

Part of Box Vox’s Package as Pixel series, is this vintage Campbell’s Soup tin sign. Created around 1900-1910, this execution of soup can as art predates Andy Warhol’s efforts by half a century.

And, long before flag burning was en vogue, these signs were deemed to be a desecration of the American Flag and most were destroyed. Because destroying a flag comprised of soup cans seems perfectly reasonable.

One of these signs recently sold at auction for $18,400.
